As you can see, they had a fabulous time! CLRW held our monthly business meeting on September 20th at the Lakeside Golf Club. Brenda Potter, a professional in the insurance industry and our 2nd Vice President-Membership, gave a detailed presentation on the "Medicare Maze" and all of the options available to us.
Our members came prepared and asked excellent questions. Brenda is extremely knowledgeable on all aspects of Medicare and it was wonderful to have her as our Guest Speaker! We will present a book on Social Security, Medicare and Government Pensions in her honor to the Tye Preston Memorial Library.

CLRW's June Business Meeting was highly informative and despite the oppressive heat was well attended! We were honored to have as our Guest Speaker, Judge Wigington, Comal County Court at Law #3. The focus of her speech was the Mental Health Court that is under her purview. Comal County has made significant progress with addressing the mental health issues in our community. She praised the Commissioners Court, the Criminal District Attorney's Office, and our Comal County Sheriff's Office for their joint support. .
CLRW was also honored to have one of our scholarship recipients, Autumn Stage, join us for the meeting! Autumn spoke about her plans to attend Texas A&M in the fall and her appreciation for financial assistance

Our 1VP - Programs, Jan Hunt, reviews the list of books requested for purchase by Tye Preston Memorial Library and then selects one that "matches" with our monthly guest speakers. For example, when Comal County Sheriff Mark Reynolds was our Guest Speaker, Jan purchased Stories from the Sheriff's Daughter. We ask our speakers to sign their book and we also include a book plate with our logo, our name, the name of the guest speaker and the date. President Jeanne Slupik is pictured with Natalie Shults, the Tye Preston Memorial Library Director. Included also is a photo of some of our previous purchases.
If you are planning to attend the Texas Federation of Republican Women Convention, please go to TFRW.com to register.
You will register as a GUEST as we have not yet voted on delegates.
Apparently, hotel reservations are already an issue so start planning accordingly!

CLRW held their 2023 New Member Orientation on May 23 at the Mystic Shores Community Center. We had ten new members present and 14 members of the Executive Committee. The event was hosted by our VP-Membership, Brenda Potter, with food provided by the Executive Committee. This was an excellent opportunity for the committee to describe their duties and provide information about themselves. The best part was when the new members gave information about their backgrounds, where they are from, and why they joined our club. You can tell by the photo that this was a fun event!

Comal County Sheriff Mark Reynolds was the Guest Speaker for CLRW's May Business Meeting. We received an excellent update on the status of the jail occupancy, his budget issues, his concerns regarding growth, his personnel shortages, how his office is equipped to handle mental health concerns in the county, and strategies to support the county during this current growth spurt and beyond.
We also received a detailed update from our Legislation Chair, Carolyn Besselman, regarding the status of the bills we are watching. Great meeting!!!

Our Convention Registration blast is scheduled to go out this evening at 5:30 pm. As a member of the Board of Directors and someone who dedicates their time to TFRW I wanted you to be aware registration is opening.
We could also use your help communicating two things.
At this time, members will Register as a Guest unless they are an AT-Large Delegate (TFRW Officers, District Directors, and Past Presidents). The status as a Delegate or Alternate will be updated when Club Presidents submit their Club Credentials. Members must be Credentialed by their Club President to be seated as a Delegate or Alternate. Once credentialed, the Credentials Committee will notify members of their status as a Delegate or Alternate.
Regarding Hotel Reservations, we have two excellent hotel options for convention: The Westin Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas (located across the street from the convention center) and the Marriott Dallas Las Colinas (located .04 miles from the convention center). The Westin’s rate is $169 per night and the Marriott’s rate is $149 per night.
The Marriott website shows that the block begins on Thursday, October 12 but that is incorrect, the block begins on Wednesday, October 13. Their website should be corrected tomorrow.
We are also checking with the Westin about getting additional rooms for Tuesday evening.
Our 2023 convention is going to be fabulous! Cindy Burkett and her convention team are hard at work making preparations and coming up with creative ideas for a one of a kind convention.

You have been emailed because you are a member of CLRW. Our Legislation Chair, Carolyn Besselman, has stayed on "target" with ERIC and we need your assistance! Contact those listed at the bottom of this email no later than tomorrow!!! Make our voice heard!!! No more ERIC!!!!!
Urgent Legislative Matters!!!
As many of you know, Dr. Dana Meyers, RPT Vice Chair, has been working very diligently to educate fellow Republicans around the state on the program called ERIC or Electronic Registration Information Center. This is a program that Texas has been involved in that needs to be dissolved. Today, Dr. Meyers has expressed great concern that House Speaker Dade Phelan has quietly been putting the word out that the House will not take up Election Integrity bills!! These are bills that have been sitting there a MONTH! This includes Rank Choice Voting!
Folks, I know we are asking a lot right now, but this Legislative session is almost over and it will be another two years before we have another voice. How dare our speaker shun anything regarding Election Integrity!
Please, please take 15-30 minutes out of your day and call these people no later than this Friday, May 5. Their offices need to be bombarded by calls in order to get the message that we want these bills heard.
When you call, be cordial, but firm. Here is a script that is easy to follow. Of course, you may add to it.
“Hello.” “My name is __________.” “I live in Comal County and am calling about the Election Integrity Bills…SB 1070 (the ERIC bill).” I urge Representative _______ to get this bill on the calendar and move it forward.” “It is imperative that we discontinue this ineffective program.” “I understand there are two companion bills also: HB 2809 and HB 5254 that I support.” “Please move these two forward also.”
“I also want to comment on SB 921 and HB 3611.” “We need to see movement on these bills.” “I am totally against preferential voting or rank choice voting.”
Here are the numbers: House Elections Committee and don’t forget Dade Phelan.
Reggie Smith 512 463-0297
John Bucy 512 463-0696
Dustin Burrows 512 463-0542

Thank you for
KEEPING TEXAS RED!!!!!
Fellow Republicans,
Tuesday was an eye-opening day in the House at the Texas Legislature. As a mother and grandmother, nothing is more important to me than children. The bill Senator Donna Campbell, along with many other Republicans (and a couple of Democrats) are trying to get passed to the Governor for signature, is SB14. This bill is to prohibit certain procedures and treatments for gender transition reassignment in children or gender dysphoria and the use of public money or public assistance to provide those procedures and treatments. The House bill equivalent is HB 1686. Many Republicans showed up at the capitol on Tuesday from all over Texas, including Comal County. It was a long day, but when the bill finally made it to the floor sometime around 2:45 p.m., it was halted by a point of order on a wording technicality. However, things took a dark turn.
The gallery was filled with ‘red shirts’, but also many LGBTQ groups. You can guess what I am getting to next. They decided to take over the meeting and get loud and nasty. It felt surreal and reminded me of January 6, only this time in Texas. It became so obnoxious that the Speaker had everyone leave the gallery. But wait…they (the obnoxious) group, took it out into the rotunda and stairwells.
My point here is…
We cannot and MUST NOT let them win or take over our capitol. This bill must be passed. I fear that the crowds will continue to grow and Republicans need to take this seriously. These times are different under the Biden Regime and we are in a position that is difficult for many of us to grasp. If we don’t stand up for children now, we will lose generations to this evil that is creeping in. It’s one thing to see it on TV, but another to witness it in person. The bill, as of now, is back on the schedule to be heard this Friday. Please consider giving up one day to be there. Republicans all over Texas should fill the seats so that there is no room for the opposition. If you do attend, be prepared for anything. Arrive by 8:00 – 8:30. Wear comfortable shoes. They do not allow drinks, food or signs in the gallery. Wear RED of course. Bulverde Spring Branch Republicans are trying to get a bus. I will let you know as soon as I find out. I plan on going on the bus if they do. I would rather donate to the bus trip than deal with traffic, gas and parking.
There are many other important bills also, but this one has so much opposition from the Trans group. Members of all the Comal County Clubs have been showing up and showing that we all want to do what is best for kids.
I was very proud of our elected officials that I witnessed working tirelessly for us and we all need to thank them. Thank you, Naomi Narvaiz (SREC) for keeping us posted on updates, which come quickly and often. If you do decide to attend Friday, please text one of the following by Thursday evening just to make sure everything is still scheduled.

CLRW Members at the "Tailgate with Team CASA" Fundraiser on April 28, 2023. Despite the threat of torrential downpours, we all showed up in support of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). A number of our members are either Advocates, Volunteers, or serve on the Board of Directors. We are honored to support this organization that fights so hard for our children in need. In FY22, 255 trained CASA volunteers advocated for 562 central Texas children. Bravo!

As most of you know, the CLRW Guest Speaker for April was Dr. Dana Myers, Vice Chair of the Republican Party of Texas. She has made it her mission to have Texas released from their current contract with the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC) system.
I requested that Carolyn Besselman, our Legislation Chair, prepare an Information Sheet for you and include the list of representatives to call. Please take the time to read the information below and make your voice heard!

Who or What is ERIC?
ERIC is a program that Texas joined in 2020 in order to try and help make elections more safe and secure. However, many Republicans say that Texas should leave this program now as there are many “red flags,” that its intent is not what was proposed, and could be something far more damaging.
§ Electronic Registration Information Center
§ Founded in 2012 by David Becker
§ 501 (c)(3) funded by Pew Charitable Trust and George Soros Open Society Foundation (Hard Core Leftists) This says a lot right here!
§ Currently 30 states plus Texas participate. California and New York do not.
§ Texas entered into a contract with ERIC in 2020 for 1.5 million for 2 years.
§ Texas joined ERIC to assist Texas election officials in identifying and conducting outreach to eligible, but unregistered voters to encourage them to register to vote.
§ Member states pay a onetime fee of $25,000 plus annual dues.
§ Larger states pay more than larger states.
§ Annual dues range from $26,000 to $116,000!
§ This DOES NOT include the cost to register voters!
§ ERIC’s website states that all member states RECEIVE reports that show:
1. Voters that have moved within their state
2. Voters who have moved out of state
3. Voters who have died
4. Duplicate registrations in the same state
5. Potential eligible, but unregistered voters
§ ERIC’s website says states may REQUEST a report identifying voters who:
1. Appear to have voted twice within the state in the prior federal election
2. Voted in more than one state in the prior federal election
3. Voted on behalf of a deceased voter in the prior federal election
§ In 2022, the number of Texas Voter records flagged for possible corrective action was difficult to pin down.
§ Early estimates found only about 800 voters at a cost of $1,354.44 per voter. Really???
§ Later it was estimated that it was more like 127,074 voters at a cost of $8.53!
Other things that don’t make sense….
§ ERIC has just 3 employees.
§ There is no physical address.
§ The virtual address is in Washington D.C.
§ It’s registered as a private corporation in DELAWARE.
§ Does NOT have to publicly disclose records regarding transmission and storage of personally and identifiable information for citizens in all its member states.
§ Most Board members listed on the website are Democrat.
§ Who is getting the (PII) personal identifiable information
§ What is all this personal information really being used for?
§ Ericstates.org is the website.
Other states are pulling out of ERIC and it warrants the concern why Texas has not pulled out sooner.
There is so much more on this subject and you can read more in depth about it by going to Texas Legislature Online and looking up HB 2809. There are two companion bills also.
Representative Jacey Jetton has introduced HB 2809, which would put an expiration date on the state’s participation in this program. Texas would need to create their own cross-check alternative program.
As of April 20, this bill is pending in committee. Please pick up a phone and contact the following representatives and let them know you are all for Texas pulling out of ERIC. State your name, address and let them know you are highly concerned regarding the ERIC program. It is not something you support and are very concerned that it is not doing what it advertises it is supposed to do and that it could be doing more harm for Texas. You support HB 2809 and want to see it pass this session. Thank them for listening to your concern and for working for Texas.

CLRW's April business meeting was a Hat Contest and "Ladies in Red"
luncheon with guest speaker Dr. Dana Myers - Vice Chairman of the Republican Party of Texas. She spoke on the issue of ERIC - Electronic Registration Information Center. CLRW likes to mix serious business with fun activities and today was an excellent example.
We are so thankful for the support from Canyon Lake JROTC Honor Guard;
our "Hat Contest Judges; our Guest Speaker, Dr. Dana Myers; and all of
our ladies in hats! We had a significant number of spouses attend and we
so appreciate it when they join us! Some are also excellent bakers! Thank you
also to Lakeside Golf Club for their continued support and for catering this event!

CLRW was honored to have a table at the 100 Club of Comal County Banquet on April 11. Our own Carolyn Besselman sang the National Anthem and corralled us to bring desserts.
It was a lovely evening and we also took the opportunity to present Sue Piner, Chairman of the Comal County Republican Party, with a check for $600.00!! We love our First Responders!

THIS BILL NEEDS YOUR ACTION TODAY:
House resolution 85: “Honoring Victor L. Holmes and Mark A. Phariss of Plano for their civic engagement and contributions to the LGBTQ+ community”. The resolution’s Democrat author said it honors the two men for “an unyielding commitment to the advancement of human rights and the LGBTQ+community,” adding that they have “earned the admiration and appreciation of innumerable people.”
This is the first resolution in a list of over 160 resolutions that the House will vote on at 10:00 AM tomorrow, March 16th. The resolution list can be found here: Congratulatory And Memorial Calendar Thursday, March 16, 2023 10:00 AM.
This list is essentially a ‘package’ of resolutions that the Representatives get one vote on. Because there are so many resolutions stuffed into one package, it's very difficult for the Representatives to know what is actually in the ‘package’.
This is the second time this month that the House will have a package of resolutions that include honoring Texas LGBTQ+ activists.
Last week the House approved the package of over 200 resolutions including one retroactively naming February 14th 2023 as “LGBTQ Chambers of Commerce Day” at the Capitol.
It passed unanimously because the representatives did not know what was in that package of resolutions. 56 of the representatives changed their vote to no after they realized what they voted for.
We do not want them to have to change their votes this time. AND we do Not want our Republican-led House to celebrate the Left.
A vote NO on this package of resolutions that includes HR 85 is a vote to uphold Republican principles and Platform plank 155.
ACTION: call the Representatives in SD25. Send a clear message: make sure they know HR 85 is in this resolutions package, and what it entails. Ask them to vote no on the full resolutions package.

A reminder from Sue Piner, Chair, Comal County Republican Party
Certification for Deputy Voter Registrars expired December 31, 2022.
The CCRP strongly urges all executive committee members (Precinct Chairs), club presidents, and club members, enroll in an upcoming class to receive your two-year certification for Deputy Voter Registrar.
Why get started so early? Well, the last day to register to vote in the May Election (school board, mayor, bond issues) is April 7, 2023.
The NB Convention and Event Center has a Gun Show on February 18 and 19. These shows have traditionally been a great place to register voters.
The LWV has already been visible at the MLK march and booked most of the January class. Time for us to get into action.
The class is about one hour. It is held at the Comal County Elections Office, 396 Seguin, New Braunfels. There is no cost to attend but you must register in advance.
Classes are held on the second Tuesday of each month. Following are the dates for the first half of the year (we missed January).

Thank you
The January Business Meeting of the CLRW was a huge success! This year our focus is to educate and introduce our new members to our Comal County elected officials. We were very thankful to have our Comal County Judge, Sherman Krause, as our January Guest Speaker. Growth and how to manage it continue to be the key areas of interest for our members. Judge Krause gave a factual, and very educational update on the issues we face today.
Next month our Guest Speaker will be Comal County Criminal District Attorney Jennifer Tharp! The CLRW President was also presented with a ruler in thanks from Colette Laine.
Next month our Guest Speaker will be Comal County Criminal District Attorney Jennifer Tharp! The CLRW President was also presented with a ruler in thanks from Colette Laine.

The ruler is a yard stick from the TFRW Convention in San Antonio from November 11-13, 1971. The quote on the ruler reads " Government By Republicans Is When An Inch Is An Inch And A Dollar Can Be A Dollar Again." I don't think she is going to give it up!

Nancy Deckard, a dedicated member of our club, passed away on January 19, 2023. Her mass will be celebrated at 11:30am on Wednesday, January 24, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Canyon Lake. If you cannot attend the service, it will stream live at the following link https://youtu.be/Bvcm06exMSM and will then also be available afterward.
The CLRW members send blessings and warm thoughts to the Family of Nancy Deckard.

Proclamation of Thanksgiving
This is the proclamation which set the precedent for America's national day of Thanksgiving. During his administration, President Lincoln issued many orders similar to this. For example, on November 28, 1861, he ordered government departments closed for a local day of thanksgiving.
Sarah Josepha Hale, a 74-year-old magazine editor, wrote a letter to Lincoln on September 28, 1863, urging him to have the "day of our annual Thanksgiving made a National and fixed Union Festival." She explained, "You may have observed that, for some years past, there has been an increasing interest felt in our land to have the Thanksgiving held on the same day, in all the States; it now needs National recognition and authoritive fixation, only, to become permanently, an American custom and institution."
Prior to this, each state scheduled its own Thanksgiving holiday at different times, mainly in New England and other Northern states. President Lincoln responded to Mrs. Hale's request immediately, unlike several of his predecessors, who ignored her petitions altogether. In her letter to Lincoln she mentioned that she had been advocating a national thanksgiving date for 15 years as the editor of Godey's Lady's Book. George Washington was the first president to proclaim a day of thanksgiving, issuing his request on October 3, 1789, exactly 74 years before Lincoln's.
The document below sets apart the last Thursday of November "as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise." According to an April 1, 1864, letter from John Nicolay, one of President Lincoln's secretaries, this document was written by Secretary of State William Seward, and the original was in his handwriting. On October 3, 1863, fellow Cabinet member Gideon Welles recorded in his diary how he complimented Seward on his work. A year later the manuscript was sold to benefit Union troops.

Congratulations to Brenda Potter, our CLRW Caring for America Chair! CLRW was honored to deliver 288 dictionaries to the 3rd grade students at the Canyon Lake area elementary schools: Rebecca Creek, Mountain Valley, and Startzville; and 270 Electoral College Booklets to our 8th grade students!! We know how much the 3rd grade students enjoy their dictionaries and, while this is just our second year to deliver the booklets, we have indeed seen enthusiasm for our efforts.
Pictured are CLRW Members Tara and Madison Evans.

Results By Precinct indicates the total number of registered voters in a precinct, the total number of registered voters that voted in the November 8 election, and the percentage of the turnout compared to the number of registered voters. This is the TOTAL number of ballots cast, not just election day.
The 2022 Governor Results is one of many candidate tabulations but this one gives you a pretty fair representation of the percentage of GOP votes versus Dem votes. Overall, the average of the Republican vote for this election is 75% to 25%.
When you read this report, remember that there may have been a couple of different ballot styles for a precinct, based on the miscellaneous questions or races. Add both numbers together for the total candidate vote.
We all need to rest, relax, enjoy the holidays, and be ready to rock and roll come January!
Comal County is the BEST!!!! Thank you all for all you do

Please, please listen to this one. A young woman has such courage to speak the truth of what's happening in our country. You need to hear her. |
Early Voting Begins Today
CLRW's October 19 Business Meeting was another rousing success!
We sold our patriotic signs, heard from the Nominating Committee regarding our 2023/2024 Officer Slate, gathered a table full of candy for "Halloween In Sattler," and received a report from our
Americanism Chair, Chrystina Power, on Christopher Columbus.
Our own Senator Donna Campbell was our Guest Speaker and she gave an uplifting speech on the importance of being a Republican and a Republican that votes. We were indeed honored to present her with a General Election donation for her campaign. This was CLRW's first year EVER to provide donations for the General Election. In total, we donated $15,000 this year in campaign donations.
Way to go, CLRW!!

CLRW VP-Programs, Marsha Cooper, is ready for the election!
She has a corner lot facing FM 32 in Fischer so lots of exposure!
Thank you, Marsha!
September has been quite the month for CLRW...
First the Freedom Walk on 9-11 followed by our FUNdraiser on September 17 and then we capped it off with our Business Meeting on September 21! We were sincerely honored to host our Texas First Lady Cecilia Abbott and the "First Dog" Pancake at our meeting. Our First Lady and Pancake arrived early to allow for photo opportunities and our members loved it! Pancake almost stole the show - she is a beautiful and sweet Golden Retriever who obviously knew the event was all about her! First Lady Cecilia was so very gracious and gave us a short speech on her and Pancake's efforts in support of her husband's re-election campaign. VOTE RED!!
Our VP-Programs, Marsha Cooper, moderated our "Elections 101" panel which included Cynthia Jaqua, Comal County Elections Office; Janet Blum and Carolyn Besselman, Comal County Elections Judges; and Sue Piner, Chairman, Comal County Republican Party. We have many new members this year and we wanted to ensure they understood the election process, the roles of election judges and clerks, the Early Voting Ballot Board, and our members' role in getting out the vote. The panel members kept the conversation light, sometimes funny, but always instructive. "I did not know that" was an oft heard murmur. We are sincerely thankful to the panel members for their time and dedication serving Comal County!
We also took the opportunity to recognize our nominee for the 2022 TFRW Tribute to Women, our Janet Blum. Janet is a former CLRW President; is a past President, Greater San Antonio Council (GSAC) of the TFRW, and has held a host of other positions within our club. Most notably she was the force behind our annual FUNdraiser's Live and Silent Auctions. She created a team, a collection of excellent auction items, and an organized timeline for bidding and buying items.
When Janet was in charge, no drama, just get it done! Well done, Janet!

Photo is of our CLRW President, Jeanne Slupik, speaking at the TFRW Board Meeting on September 16, 2022.
Also pictured is TFRW President, Kit Whitehill. When Kit Whitehill was our Guest Speaker at our Membership Luncheon, our president showed her what Jeanne calls the "CLRW 2021 Book."
Our fabulous Newsletter Editor, Barbara Knight, created it and it contains all of the 2021 newsletters, and all of the minutes from the Executive Committee Meetings and our monthly Business Meetings.
Kit liked it so much,
she asked Jeanne to talk about it at her board meeting. As Jeanne likes to point out - "this will be invaluable next year when we are submitting documentation for NFRW and TFRW awards.
We won't just 'talk the talk' but can prove we 'walked the walk' as all the needed photos and articles will be available in one source!"
Thank you, Barbara!

From CLRW President, Jeanne Slupik: I extend many thanks to all who attended our TEXAS PROUD AND STRONG FUNdraiser on September 17th. This is our ONLY fundraising event, and it is your support that enables us to donate to Republican candidates and keep Texas RED! |
Our VP-Fundraising, Carolyn Besselman, and her co-chair, Maria Seiler, produced an exceptional, professional, and highly entertaining event for all to enjoy! It is our fabulous members and their spouses that do the grunt work and all of those "behind the scenes" activities that ensure our success year after year. Kudos to all from a very proud and grateful president.

Governor Abbott says, "Beto O'Rourke is TOO dangerous for Texas
With Texas elections around the corner – Governor Abbott says, "Beto O'Rourke is TOO dangerous for Texas. Governor Greg Abbott has come out swinging against Beto O'Rourke, the Democratic challenger in the Texas gubernatorial election. In a recent statement, Abbott said that O'Rourke is too dangerous for Texas and that he must be defeated. This comes as no surprise, given that O'Rourke is considered to be a rising star in the Democratic Party. He has been drawing large crowds during his campaign tour across the state.
Governor Abbott on Tuesday shared on Twitter, "Beto O'Rourke is TOO dangerous for Texas. He supports defunding & dismantling our police. In Texas, we support our law enforcement officers. We don't defund & disrespect them." |

CLRW was honored to have two outstanding Guest Speakers for our August Business Meeting:
Rhonda Marquardt, President, Kinney County Republican Women; and, our U.S. Congressman, Chip Roy. The focus of their speeches was primarily on the border crisis. Rhonda lives there and deals with the myriad frustrations on a daily basis. She refuses to succumb to fear and is uplifted by her faith and her community. Congressman Roy is a staunch reporter and visitor to the border. He stressed the lack of compassion our current government has for the migrants crossing under hellish circumstances, their total lack of control over the Mexican cartels, and their inability to stem the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. resulting in an incomprehensible loss of lives due to overdoses. |

I have his permission to present it to you as a teaser - he is scheduled to be the Guest Speaker at our November CLRW Business Meeting. I highly recommend you also take the time to peruse his website, CONDEMNEDUSA.com.

On July 21, CLRW President, Jeanne Slupik, and CLRW Armed Forces Chair, Melinda Rapp, spent funds donated by the CLRW members to purchase needed supplies for the Joint Base San Antonio Army Fisher House at Brooke Army Medical Center.
We don't buy anything that is not on their "needs" list. Today we bought cleaning supplies, batteries, storage bags, garbage bags, toilet paper, paper towels and sugar.
Robyn Stewart, Manager, Army Fisher House, was thrilled with our donations. It was another great day to help those who serve.

Texas Grocery Store Tycoon Sponsors Drag Queen Shows for Kids

Sebastian Castro
July 13, 2022
Charles Butt, the billionaire heir and CEO of the Texas grocery empire H-E-B, sponsored a recent “family friendly” drag show and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on anti-school choice campaigns.
In June, H-E-B sponsored an LGBT “pride” event in downtown Austin. The event, called Rainbow on the Creek, included a drag queen story hour, a “family-friendly all ages” drag show performed by a group called the Hydrated Queer Kitties, and a pride parade. A Libs of TikTok tweet showed the scantily clad performers dancing sensually in front of parents and their children.
The event’s website says, “The celebration will include 25+ [activities] by LGBTQIA+ nonprofits and partners, a Queer BIPOC and Latinx artisan & craft market, gender-affirming care & sexual health resources, and many more activities for the whole family.”
But this is not the only controversial cause Butt has supported.
One of Mr. Butt’s influential anti-school choice operations comes in the form of The Charles Butt Public Education Political Action Committee, which has made donations to 22 political campaigns that oppose school choice. The PAC has received $750,000 in contributions from Butt.
Of the 22 campaign donation recipients, 16 are Republican candidates, including Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan, State Rep. Glenn Rogers, and Comptroller Glenn Hegar (who received a combined total $120,000). Of the 16 Republican candidates, Phelan and six others have been endorsed by the Texas State Teachers Association (part of the National Education Association, the largest teachers union). The TSTA also currently endorses Democrat gubernatorial candidate Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke.
Butt has also heavily funded the Raise Your Hand Texas organization, which opposes school choice and advocates for spending more tax money on the current public system, as well as The Charles Butt Foundation, which also opposes school choice.
However, Butt’s campaigns have placed him at odds with a growing number of parents across the state. A 2022 Morning Consult poll revealed that 76 percent of Texas parents would support directly funding students instead of the current government system.
Additionally, a record number of Texas families are now choosing to homeschool their children. The Texas Home School Coalition reports a near tripling of homeschooled students between April and October 2020 (from 4.5-12.3 percent of all Texas students) making for a total of 750,000 homeschoolers in Texas alongside 250,000 students in Texas private schools.
The popularity of school choice among families and grassroots activists grew significantly during the COVID lockdowns, when parents across the nation were able to look more closely at the dysfunctional government monopoly system and what schools were teaching their children. As Texas Scorecard has frequently chronicled, many decried the troubling and sexually explicit curricula and racist ideologies taught in their children’s classrooms.
With the Republican Party of Texas selecting school choice as a legislative priority for the upcoming 2023 state legislative session, parents and citizens are eager to see how the Republican-controlled Texas Legislature will respond.

Greetings from Historic Fort Sam Houston, Joint Base San Antonio!
In collaboration with the San Antonio Blues Society and Sam’s Burger joint, we are hosting a Military Appreciation Night at Sam's Burger Joint in San Antonio, TX, on Wednesday, the 27th of July 2022. Sam's Burger Joint is San Antonio's premier Live Music venue and Burger Joint. Sam’s Burger Joint and Music Hall is known to both artists and appreciative fans alike as the best music room in San Antonio. With an excellent sound system, an unobstructed view, great food and a diverse line-up of acts, it’s not hard to see why it has that reputation.
We are asking members of the local community, to include local DoD Civilians and local Veterans groups, to sponsor young active duty service members by purchasing a ticket in advance and donating it to a Soldier, Airman, Sailor or Marine stationed at Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA). These service members are a long way from home and are here in San Antonio for training & certification prior to shipping out to their permanent duty stations around the world. Many have less than one year in service and are experiencing being away from home for the first time. We’re working with units on Joint Base San Antonio to try and get these young service men and women out of the barracks for a night. By demonstrating our appreciation for their service, and showing these young service men and women they are welcomed by our community, we hope to boost their morale and help prevent suicides.
NOTE: Advance Tickets are only $10. We are not asking for any cash donations, only that your organization sponsor a Soldier or Airman by providing them with a donated ticket to the event. If it's within your budget, you or your individual members can sponsor more than one Service member.
If anyone would like to sponsor an active duty service member, you can buy a ticket online, then send the PDF file/Ticket Receipt to: Blues_Like_It_Usta_Wuz@outlook.com. We will ensure the ticket you’ve purchased is given to a Soldier or Airman so they can attend the event on the 27th of July 2022.
Organizations and individuals can sponsor up to eight (8) Soldiers here at JBSA, (the maximum amount of tickets you can buy at one time). Here's the link:

Also, if your organization would like your logo displayed on the large banner showing our sponsors, please send me an image of your logo no later than the 20th of July so that we have time to include it on the banner.
I am your Point of Contact for any questions.
Thank you.

Canyon Lake Republican Women came ready for a parade today! Paula Schuldheisz, our "Float Master" came prepared for all contingencies - all we had to do was show up and help! As you can tell by the photos, we came to have fun and we did!
Many thanks to Paula, Beth Bready, Pam Smith, Nita King, Carolyn Besselman, Janet Blum, Marsha Cooper, Kathy Beam, Becky Swindal, and Jeanne Slupik for braving the heat and showing all how to have a good time!
The crowd was great and they loved us!
We had to include a photo of the Comal Sheriff's Office Honor Guard - great volunteers who also support our Freedom Walk on 9-11. Our heroes today were Jerry Besselman, Jim Hynes, and John Schuldheisz - the best "go to guys" ever! We are so thankful for our supportive husbands!

Comal County to restrict certain fireworks due to drought conditions
‘Skyrockets with sticks’ or ‘Missiles with fins’ banned beginning June 24
Due to extreme drought conditions, Comal County is
restricting the use of certain fireworks.
Comal County Commissioners adopted an order Tuesday that bans “skyrockets with sticks” or “missiles with fins”
in unincorporated areas of Comal County.
The order goes into effect June 24, a news release said.
“We don’t want to limit what can be sold or used during upcoming celebrations,” said Comal County Fire Marshal Kory Klabunde. “Due to the extreme drought and severe fire danger the county is experiencing and for the safety of our citizens and their property, we are restricting the sale and use of rockets with sticks and missiles with fins
until the drought conditions no longer exist.”
A violation of the order is considered a Class C misdemeanor. The order remains in effect until the Texas Forest Service determines drought conditions no longer exist in Comal County.
For more information about the order,
contact the Comal County Fire Marshal’s office at 830-643-374

CLRW is ready for the July 4th Parade! We have all the volunteers needed for the float, but would love to see you on the parade route. This parade is in Startzville, on the southside of Canyon Lake. The key intersection is FM 2673 and FM 3159. Find a spot to park your vehicle (most back in and face the route), and wave like crazy when our float comes by! The parade starts at 10am, a change from years past so don't be late!
Legislative Priorities for 2023-2024
Protect our Elections: Restore felony penalties and enact civil penalties for Election Code violations, which shall be enforceable by any Texas jurisdiction, including the Texas Attorney General. Require citizenship verification of each voter. Restrict the distribution of mail-in ballots to only disabled, military, and citizens that are out of state. Reduce the time allowed for early voting, and eliminate the three-day gap between early voting and election day. Establish closed primaries in Texas. As technology evolves, we encourage the passage of legislation that ensures the security of our elections.
• Ban Democrat Chairs: To ensure all legislative Republican priorities are given a fair opportunity to become law, the Republican-controlled Texas legislature shall adopt a rule that would end the practice of awarding committee chairmanships to Democrats.
• Abolish Abortion in Texas: Abolish abortion by ensuring the right to life and equal protection of the laws to all preborn children from the moment of fertilization, including adopting effective tools to ensure the enforcement of our laws to protect life when district attorneys fail to do so.
• Stop Sexualizing Texas Kids: Repeal Texas Penal Code “Obscenity Exemption” 43.24(c), which allows children access to harmful, explicit, or pornographic materials and 43.25(f)(2 3), which allows sexual performance by a child. In addition, prohibit teaching, exposure, and/or discussion of sexual matters (mechanics, feelings, orientation, or “gender identity” issues), and prohibit use or provision of related books and other materials using criminal, civil or other enforcement measures.
• Ban Gender Modification of Children: Texas must ban chemical castration, puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, genital mutilation, bodily alteration surgery, psychological/social transitioning, and any other methods applied to or performed on children.
• Secure the Border and Protect Texans: Texas shall immediately deny all taxpayer funded services and subsidies to illegal aliens. We call upon the Governor to assert his duty under Article 1, Section 10, Clause 3 of the US Constitution to declare an invasion on our Texas border and do everything in his power to protect Texans from this invasion. The legislature shall direct the Governor to enter into an Interstate Compact with one or more states for Border Security.
• Parental Rights and Educational Freedom: Parents are the primary decision makers for their children in all matters. This authority shall be protected as an inalienable right. This shall include the choice of schooling where the money follows the child without strings attached, and enforcement and penalty mechanisms when parents' rights are violated. The right to education shall be free from any social theories.
• Defend Our Gun Rights: Protect our gun rights against threats, such as red flag laws, federal, state or other restrictions, by strengthening and preserving our inalienable rights under the second amendment to protect our life, liberty and property. The Texas Legislature should eliminate gun-free zones.
These priorities were chosen by over 5,000 voting delegates at the state convention, June 13-18 in Houston Texas. Delegates were presented with a list of 15 topics selected by the Legislative Priorities Committee after a comprehensive review of resolutions passed at the precinct and senate district levels of the convention process. Delegates were allowed to vote on 8 topics, which became the official Legislative Priorities of the Republican Party of Texas.

Our CLRW Community Relations Chair, Diane Schaule, has forwarded to me information from the New Braunfels Community Foundation that lists the ways we can assist the Uvalde Community. This is an excellent resource so please pass it on! Our Texas AG has already had to send out a warning message to be aware of fraudsters trying to profit from our goodwill. Stay safe and aware!

Prayers for Uvalde and Our Nation"As a former teacher, a mother and grandmother with grands in school, I’m heartbroken," said NFRW President Eileen Sobjack upon learning of Tuesday's tragic shooting at a Uvalde, Texas, elementary school. NFRW members are invited to join together in a prayer of comfort and healing from the NFRW Faith Coalition
"Father, we pray that you comfort the families and children of Uvalde, Texas.
"Father, protect, guard and keep our children. We pray that you give us wisdom on how to keep them safe.
"As we go forward, give us strategies to recognize warning signs and stop these violent incidents. More than anything, bring our nation back to Holiness and goodness. Help us to love our neighbors as ourselves.
"We commit these families and our nation to you. Make us once again, One nation under God!"
To the families of those involved in the senseless tragedy in Uvalde, and the community of Uvalde as a whole, words are not enough to describe our grief. The pure evil you have come face to face with is unfathomable. We pray through tears for your peace and healing. We pray that our nation awakens to how our society is failing our children, and we pray that we come together to rebuild the foundations of our great Nation so that every American child will be raised in a loving family, conscious of their value, and with a sense of purpose.
The Republican Primary Runoff election concluded yesterday. We will give you a recap tomorrow. Today is a time for us to stand together in unity as Americans and Texans. Not only for Uvalde, but for all of our children.
Thank you for standing with us.

The Greater San Antonio Council of the Texas Federation of Republican Women met on May 4 - the last meeting before the summer break. Our Guest Speaker was Chris Byrd, our newly elected State Republican Executive Committeeman for SD 25. Chris focused his briefing on the 10 principles that guide the SREC. He gave us quite the history lesson going back to Sir William Blackstone and the "Blackstone Commentaries." If you see him, be sure to congratulate him on his new grandchild.
Former longtime resident of Canyon Lake and member of CLRW, Jane Coble passed away on April 16 in Illinois, where she had moved to be closer to her family after her husband Lee died several years ago. There will be a memorial in a couple of months in their favorite place, Corpus Christi, Texas.

Congratulations to Bob Parks and the Hays County Republican Party for an outstanding event - the Lincoln Reagan Dinner on April 25. The Guest of Honor, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, gave an uplifting and powerful synopsis on how her state survived COVID and is now excelling at all levels. Our U.S. Congressman Chip Roy, who had just driven back from the border, gave a grim, detailed speech on the current conditions. We were thankful to have the opportunity to hear from two dedicated Republican leaders!
Hats Off to our CLRW VP - Membership, Brenda Potter, and her volunteers who created the perfect ambience for our "Wild About Texas" themed CLRW Membership Luncheon held on April 20. Our Guest Speaker was our very own TRFW President, Kit Whitehill, who focused her speech on educating our new members on the importance of the Texas Federation of Republican Women and the awards process. Of course, the hat contest contestants were again up to the challenge! We extend many a "Thank You!" to our judges: Patrick Seiler, Jim Hynes, and Harry Hingst. They had a tough job, but survived! Again, thanks to all for another CLRW memorable event!

Bob loved Canyon Lake, the Canyon Lake Noon Lions Club, golfing and many other activities. Please keep his wife Nancy and family in your prayers. I will pass on additional information as it becomes available.
Please consider attending the Comal County Fundraiser on April 14.
The Guest Speaker is Dr. Ben Carson, so come on!
We are blessed with an incredibly strong county chairman and volunteer staff but they need our assistance to stay open and available to all of us. Our club has directly benefited from their dedicated support of our fundraiser - last year the Headquarters, volunteers, and precinct chairs bought seven reserved tables for our fundraiser!
I have been coordinating with Susan Walker and Sharon Monge to ensure we are all more knowledgeable regarding the upcoming amendment and run-off elections.
Keeping Comal County RED is our responsibility.
See you there!

Please see note below from Deborah Wall, President, Camino Real Republican Women (CRRW) regarding the latest on the border and specifically the issue with Title 42.
Stay smart and send a thank you to Chip Roy for all he is doing regarding the border.
Border Care Project Report
Last Thursday, 24 March, with supplies donated by our Republican community, a team of volunteers with the Border Care Project made a trip to the Rio Grande Valley.
We were able to deliver four vehicles worth of hand sanitizer, insect repellent, wipes, sunscreen, first aid kits, and more directly to the agents. These supplies will be sorted by the agents for distribution to fellow agents in the field all the way to the Arizona border.
While there, an agent will give often us a briefing on the current situation involving apprehensions, human trafficking, fentanyl seizures and other illicit activity that will eventually impact ‘the interior’, ie us.
However for this briefing the agent focused on Title 42 and the impact of lifting that Trump era provision. Suffice it to say, the importance of this message was not lost on us— this will have a drastic impact on Texas. Let me explain.
Today, Wednesday, March 30, 2022, the Biden Administration is considering terminating the immigration rule that allows immigration officials to deny illegal aliens from declaring frivolous asylum claims. The Biden Administration is also considering ending Title 42, which prevents migrants with COVID or nations with contagious diseases from entering the U.S.
Removal of these two rules will exacerbate the border crisis. Thousands of migrants have already gathered on the Mexican side of the border, and they are ready to cross as soon as the rules are removed. This wave of migrants is described as a “tsunami” of migrants that will overwhelm border security.
Furthermore, because the nonprofit “charity” groups are helping to disperse the migrants throughout the country, state and local resources will be overwhelmed. Health, education, and public safety will feel the burden.
Over one million aliens have been caught since October 2021. The number will double or triple with the removal of these rules. America will be permanently “transformed” if this is allowed.
There must be a call to action for federal, state, and local elected officials to act.
Please send a ‘Thank you’ to Congressman Chip Roy for standing up for the citizens of Texas. Even though his district does not go to the border, this action of lifting Title 42 that he is fighting will most certainly have an impact on his district and all of the constituents of Texas.

The 56th Annual Texas Legislative Conference was held on March 25 at the New Braunfels Civic/Convention Center. CLRW was once again honored to be an Associate Sponsor of this event which is "a nonpartisan organization of Texas business and political leaders who meet annually in New Braunfels to focus on public policy issues." The two panel discussions on "The Current State of Texas' Economy" and "The Latest in Politics in Texas" were very informative and the moderators and panelists very knowledgeable on the topics at hand.

Canyon Lake Republican Women was very well represented at the 2022 Comal County Republican Party Convention on March 26. A number of CLRW Members and Associate Members serve as Precinct Chairs. Other members assisted as Sergeants at Arms, Check-In Assistants, and other jobs as needed. Our own Sharon Monge was the Chair of the Nominations Committee - Comal County has 90 delegates plus a host of Alternates for the Republican Party of Texas Convention in Houston! Kudos to Laura Buske, Chair of the Resolutions Committee, and the Parliamentarian, Geoff Barr, for keeping that segment of the convention "moving" while the attendees voted on 9 resolutions. To Sue Piner and crew: "Hats off for a job well done!"
The CLRW March Business Meeting was a huge success - many new members, guests, and candidates in the room and our special treat was our Guest Speaker Matt Rinaldi, Chairman, Republican Party of Texas (RPT). Mr. Rinaldi gave a very "to the point" speech about this past legislative session, his goals for the RPT, and his vision for the June RPT Convention in Houston. Our "Wild About Texas" Membership Luncheon in April is now SOLD OUT! Brenda Potter, VP-Membership, put out the challenge during the meeting and it worked! Our Guest Speaker will be Kit Whitehill, President, Texas Federation of Republican Women.
***MEMBERSHIP Luncheon is SOLD OUT***
On March 4, CLRW Members attended the March meeting of the Greater San Antonio Council (GSAC) of the Texas Federation of Republican Women (TFRW). Pictured from left to right are: Jeanne Slupik, CLRW President; Carolyn Besselman, GSAC 1VP-Programs and our 3VP-Fundraising; and Marsha Cooper, our GSAC Representative and our 1VP-Programs. It was an excellent meeting with the primary focus on the 2022 Primary Election and the issues with mail in ballots. As usual, the meeting was a great opportunity to talk with members from our fellow TFRW clubs and hear about their meetings, programs, and fundraisers.
***TIME TO GET OUT AND VOTE***
***Attention: Members***
Please ensure YOUR vote counts and vote during the Primary Election! Early voting locations remain open 7am to 7pm through Friday evening. You can of course vote on March 1 if you prefer.
Call your Republican friends and set up a breakfast, lunch or dinner date to eat and vote. Have a party! Many of you attended the Comal County Republican Candidate Forum and met candidates at our business meetings. YOU are the informed voters and we need you to step up and vote!
My 98 year old Dad voted at Saint Francis by the Lake Episcopal Church today and he loved it. He walked in, sat in a chair, chose his candidates, had an assistant close by monitoring his needs and before he knew it he was done!
Thank you, Jeanne

CLRW Members spent a fun day buying and delivering much needed donations to the Brooke Army Medical Center Fisher House at Fort Sam Houston. We spent $556.97 on items we knew they NEEDED as our Military Liaison, Melinda Rapp, always coordinates her shopping list with the staff.
Pictured from left to right are: Robyn Stewart, Fisher House Manager; Star Carey, CLRW Associate Member; Jeanne Slupik, CLRW President, and Melinda Rapp, CLRW Military Liaison. Thank you CLRW for continuing this uplifting Caring for America Project!

Canyon Lake Republican Women were co-sponsors of the Comal County Republican Candidate Forum, held on Monday, January 17, at the Village Venue in New Braunfels. CLRW provided for and manned the refreshment tables, provided Greeters for attendees and candidates, and assisted with audio visual support. We were honored to be part of this well organized event.
Thank you Comal County Republican Party for spearheading this highly successful evening.
